Surgical Dermatology
Excisions
Performed by Drs. MacInnis, VonHilsheimer, Schroeder and Swenson, as well as, Sarah, Tonya and Chris, our very experienced team.
The surgeon will outline the area, local anesthesia is administered and the lesion (cancerous, pre-cancerous, cysts or cosmetic) are surgically excised with proper margins and closed with sutures. Approx.45 mins.
MOHs
Performed by Drs. MacInnis and VonHilsheimer with the assistance of Sarah, Tonya and Chris performing closures.
This is a tissue sparing procedure with the 99% cure rate for most skin cancers. Plan to be in the office 2-8 hours. Dr.s MacInnis and VonHilsheimer will mark the area to be treated with minimal margins. The area will be numbed and the tissue will be removed with care to diagram the lesion in relationship to anatomical positions. A bandage will be applied and you will sit resting to wait.
We then process the tissue in our pathology lab and determine if the margins are negative or positive.
If positive, we determine the direction. We then remove another piece of tissue and repeat the pathology process. The process continues until there are no more cancer cells visible under the microscope.
Once you are clear of Skin Cancer, Drs. MacInnis and VonHilsheimer will carefully plan your closure. Once the closure is complete, you are bandaged and ready to go home.
Other Services
Scar Revisions
Various techniques are used to improve the appearance of an older scar. This can be done through steroid injections, dermabrasion and/or surgically removing the old scar.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution (generally a salt solution) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together and the blood to clot.
LED Treatments
Performed by one of our medical staff members
A skin rejuvenation treatment using non-invasive, non-ablative Red Light Therapy, Blue Light Therapy and Infrared Light Treatment for anti-aging skin care, facial wrinkles, acne treatment, stretch marks and more.
TCA Peels
A deeper peel that can help correct deeper lines, scarring and larger pores.
PDT Photodynamic Therapy with Levulan
The treatment is for the Actinic Keratosis (AK) or someone who has significant sun damage with a history of AK’s. Performed in office, the Levulan medication is applied to the treatment area, incubates for a specified amount of time and then the patient sits under the blue light to activate the medication. You will be at the office for a few hours and will need to say out of the sun for a few days, as the treatment typically elicits a sunburn like reaction. http://www.dusapharma.com/actinic-keratoses2.html
General Dermatology
Mole Checks Visual inspection of moles for any abnormalities. Medical providers may use a Dermatoscope to better visualize a suspicious mole. A dermatoscope is a non-invasive device used in combination witha technique that allows microscopic visualization of subsurface skin structures not visible to the naked eye. This avoids a unneeded biopsy.
Skin Cancer Screenings Very easy preventative measure to help in early detection of skin cancers. This is a visual inspection of your skin by one of our Doctors or Certified Physician Assistants. During this screening, your provider looks for any abnormal lesions. If any abnormal lesions are found a biopsy may be necessary.
Patch Testing: A patch is applied to the skin which contains different allergens. In 48-72 hours it is interpreted by a medical provider and if necessary, a treatment plan is advised.
Pathology Lab
We have a CLIA and CAP certified pathology laboratory located in our Leesburg, Mt. Dora and The Villages offices, With the help of our Certified Histotechnologist, we process skin samples daily.
The major benefits to having our own pathology lab, is a lower turn around time to obtain your results, and greater accuracy in the diagnosis. Drs MacInnis and VonHilsheimer see most biopsied lesions clinically and then they see them microscopically, enabling them to have a more complete picture.
