National Healthy Skin Month: How to Spot the Early Signs of Melanoma

Woman with fair skin examining her arm skin with magnifier for melanoma in Leesburg, FLNovember is National Healthy Skin Month, the perfect reminder to take a closer look at your skin and learn how to recognize changes that could signal something serious. While you may tend to focus your skin health efforts on hydration, sun protection, and anti-aging, it’s important not to overlook monitoring for early signs of melanoma, the most dangerous skin cancer.

At MacInnis Dermatology, our Board-Certified Dermatologists, Mohs Surgeons and providers are dedicated to diagnosing and treating skin cancers, including melanoma. With over 10,000 Mohs procedures performed and extensive experience in complex skin cancer cases, Dr. MacInnis and Dr vonHilsheimer combines advanced surgical skill with compassionate, personalized care to help patients in Central Florida protect and restore their skin health.

Why Early Detection Matters

When detected early, melanoma is highly treatable. However, once it spreads to other parts of the body, it becomes much more difficult to manage. That’s why dermatologists emphasize regular self-exams and professional skin checks, simple habits that can truly save lives.

The ABCDEs of Melanoma

Dermatologists use the ABCDE rule to help identify suspicious moles or spots:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.
  • B – Border: The edges are irregular, blurred, or jagged.
  • C – Color: Look for uneven shades of brown, black, tan, red, white, or blue.
  • D – Diameter: Most melanomas are larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), but they might be smaller at first.
  • E – Evolving: Any mole or spot that has size, shape, or color changes, or that itches or bleeds, should be evaluated.

Know Your Skin and Perform Monthly Checks

During National Healthy Skin Month, make it a goal to perform a full-body skin check. Examine your skin from your head to your toes using a mirror, and don’t forget often-overlooked areas like the scalp, between your toes, and under your nails. If you notice new growths or changing moles, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist right away.
